Mississippi
saltwater rules

The Mississippi Department of Marine Resources sets the rules inside Mississippi’s state waters, out to 3 nautical miles from shore. Beyond that, the Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council writes the federal rules.

Nearby waters: Alabama · Louisiana

91 species with a rule on file, checked Sep 16, 2026. 6 of them carry a federal-waters rule because Mississippi lists none of its own; those rows say so. Every row names its source and the day it was last checked; the official rulebook is the final word.

Tails n' Scales

Only trips that will target red snapper: before leaving the dock, one angler aboard any private or for-hire vessel must open a trip in Tails n' Scales, carry the trip number on the water, and report the landing when the trip ends — one report per vessel per trip. A trip that isn't after red snapper needs nothing.

Species: Red Snapper.

Licences and the fine print

  • A recreational saltwater fishing license is required for all recreational finfish harvest; licenses run one year from the date of purchase.
  • Every licensed angler aboard needs the free Mississippi Recreational Offshore Landing Permit (MS-ROLP) to possess or land reef fish or cobia in Mississippi.

How far out do Mississippi state waters go?

How current are these Mississippi rules?

Every row shows its source and the day it was last checked; the latest is Sep 16, 2026. A watchman re-reads the agency pages nightly and the date advances when they are unchanged. Rules change mid-season by proclamation, so the official rulebook is the final word.
